An Evening With Silk Sonic / Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak & Silk Sonic / November 12, 2021

Right at the announcement of their collaboration, the world instantly knew the potential the star-studded duo had for a classic R&B record. Flash forward eight months of chart-topping lead singles and mounting anticipation, the record in its final form is ultimately a success story, living up to the impossible expectations and delivering on exactly what they set out to do.

No strangers to implementing periodic styles in their own music, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak together demonstrate their education on the ‘70s by their impressively tantamount instrumentation throughout the entirety of the record. Gorgeously produced and lusciously arranged, the almost live-sounding instrumentals envelope listeners into a trance (“Leave The Door Open”), paired with vocal harmonies that truly soar and glide at times (“Put On A Smile”).

There is also an undeniable underlying chemistry between the two singers that so deftly allocate each other’s strengths on any given track, such as on the infectious bass-driven “Fly As Me”. This synchrony allows them to nail practically all of the different styles showcased on the track-list, despite the relatively low stylistic variety overall, and in this regard the shorter runtime works much to their favor.

Where they lack in putting forth anything truly groundbreaking, Silk Sonic triumphs in capturing the magic of decades-old soul and funk about as compellingly and beautifully as any current artists possibly could. There is a lot to be said about the simple goal and execution that this album accomplishes to a tee.
