As the arrival of Abel’s (The Weeknd) trendsetting 80’s revival took the industry by storm with his previous release, it was hard to imagine how he could follow it up with a second act. However, not only does he double-down on the synth-pop, alternative R&B, and disco styles that come together even sharper and more grand, but he also manages to create an even more immersive and holistic experience that stuns in its world-creation.
Sonically the project soaks in the chilling ‘80s sonic atmosphere, but with the help from pop music ringers Max Martin and Daniel Lopatin, Abel brings these sounds to an ethereal level. The synths are more layered and hard-hitting than ever, and in general the production holds a consistent shine and glimmer in every instrumental. Comparatively as well, his vocal performances are expressive and assured, which the amount of time spent in this aesthetic surely has helped.
The creative and smooth transitions between every song work to further build the feeling of immersion that the flow and pacing of the whole album already strongly establish. There are more than enough twists and turns sonically and thematically to hold the listener’s suspense, but it can’t be helped but appreciate and admire the comprehensive story of reflection, regret, self-sabotage, and longing that Abel is able to create, and sustain, for the entirety of the project.
Although ‘Dawn FM’ begins the year on a high note, its middle placement in a confirmed trilogy of albums puts immense expectations and anticipation for how The Weeknd will finish the narrative. What is known for sure, however, is that Abel has ever-cemented himself as one of the most talented and resoundingly successful pop stars of our current generation.
