Her Loss / Drake & 21 Savage / November 4, 2022

When it was announced that Drake and 21 Savage would collaborate on an entire album, the excitement not only stemmed from the great track record the duo has had until now, but also from the hope that working with a close collaborator would ignite a flame under Drake’s artistry. While ‘Her Loss’ isn’t perfect by any means, it is a good reminder of both rappers’ ability and chemistry, and a joy to hear both of them trying.

The range of the production is varying, but each instrumental is familiar to at least one (or both) of their respective styles. There are the more cold-blooded tracks that favor 21’s typical flow and energy, like the bare-bones beat on “Major Distribution” or threatening aura of “More M’s” that both hit pretty hard. There’s also the more confessional or melodic tracks that Drake is more familiar with, like the floating “Pussy & Millions” that maintains stellar performances from start to finish.

Not every song is fireworks between the two, with a fair amount of lackluster verses throughout the album from both of them. Often it’s not both on the same song, but when 21 Savage is tasked to sing melody on a moodier “Hours In Silence”, or when Drake tries to be creative on “Rich Flex”, one can easily fall into the shadow of the other in quality.

Still despite the flaws, the overall cohesion Drake and 21 Savage have built and continue to build together is pretty apparent on this album. The highlights are probably some of the best material from them both that we’ll hear for a while.

Highlight(s): Pussy & Millions, On BS, Middle of the Ocean, Spin Bout U, More M’s

Lowlight(s): BackOutsideBoyz, Circo Loco, Treacherous Twins, Hours In Silence

SCORE: 5/10
