Returning to his well-known and beloved series, Lil Yachty delivers his third installment in the Lil Boat mixtape collection, “Lil Boat 3,” a project that looked to see Yachty return to his infectiously joyful and exciting sound that permeated his previous two installments. Instead, he chooses to go for a more traditional and heavier trap sound on this tape, and unfortunately Yachty fails to bring anything new, memorable, or fun to the table, while still suffering from the same recurring weaknesses.
While some moments can be attributed to the style of rap that Yachty has always embraced in his career, Yachty’s technical flaws still surface quite apparently and consistently throughout the project. His flow is often crude in structure and uninspired in delivery, paired with a frequent tendency of riding beats slightly off tempo. Many of the different voices Yachty switches to from track to track drown in autotune, and disregarding any stylistic preference, his vocals are at many moments obnoxious (“Top Down”).
His lyricism has never been a strong suit, and he proves it again on this project with undeveloped and painfully simple writing on multiple tracks (“Can’t Go”). And while the production is hit-and-miss, with a few admirable instrumentals, issues with mixing frustratingly hurt some of the vocal performances and instrumentals (“Concrete Boys”).
The solid features employed for this mixtape fail to cover Yachty’s shortcomings in his solo artistic ability. The change in tone and attitude didn’t lead to a change in capability or competency; it lead to Lil Boat’s most disappointing installment to date.
