It’s impossible to categorize “Notes On A Conditional Form” as a single genre. On their fourth studio album, The 1975 attempt their way through sounds both familiar and unfamiliar to their previous works, all strung together in a completely disorderly structure. And while some of their efforts are undercooked or too ambitious, a lot of the group’s risks and experiments on this project end up sticking the landing.
Healy states how a lot of the album is a return to their roots, channeling the post-punk pop/rock sound that sparked their initial rise to fame, and these tracks do indeed shine brightly, where the bright, colorful hooks (“If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)”), raw emotion, and high-intensity (“People”) see the rock band at their greatest focus. Their dive into 2-step garage also features some of the group’s best songwriting and vocal performances, producing some very catchy and moving pieces of electro-pop (“Frail State of Mind”). The folk balladry dispersed throughout the track-list, while at times too safe or derivative, is generally charming and showcases Healy’s vocal diversity (“Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America”).
And yet despite its many individual highlights, the album mainly falters in its construction and organization. There are about as many standout tracks as there are tracks that are too short-lived (“Playing On My Mind”), too arduous to pull off (“Don’t Worry”), or lacking in musical focus (“Bagsy Not In Net”). The progression of the track-list also makes for a disjointed listen, where each song jumps from genre to genre with no real sense of cohesiveness.
“Notes On A Conditional Form” is an admirable effort and an indication of the band’s headspace at the current moment. While not everything sticks, the album succeeds in being a bold, no-frills adventure that shows that The 1975 are having fun and staying authentic.
