After both dropping momentous solo projects respectively earlier in the year, Future and Lil Uzi Vert combine forces on a joint, celebratory project of sorts, making for one of the most anticipated rap collaborations in a while. But while many expected great results given the duo’s past track record of collaborative efforts, ‘Pluto x Baby Pluto’ does more to prove their stylistic discordance than anything else.
More often than not, Future and Uzi do display strong chemistry in their delivery, often bouncing off each other’s voices and flows with great charisma. At their best, they stick to their sticky trap flows and melodic singing lines that ride the instrumentals with infectious energy, such as on “Sleeping on the Floor” with its the fast-paced delivery and punchy hook. A good number of instrumentals also stand out as being rather distinctive for their sound, such as the haunting piano lines on “Million Dollar Play,” or the wavering and quirky guitar instrumentation on “That’s It.”
However, with this project as a whole, Future and Uzi fail to display any real sense of ambition. Their often uninspired songwriting and tedious flows tend to wear out pretty quickly, and the 16-track hour-length of the album only further accentuates this feeling. Many of the tracks also reveal a sense that Future’s and Uzi’s individual styles find difficulty in complementing each other, and instead seem to blend too seamlessly together.
There are undoubtedly strong, standout tracks on this project that demonstrate the capability that both artists have of producing, but it’s difficult not to see a sense of complacency in the overall final product.
Best Track(s): Sleeping on the Floor, Million Dollar Play, Rockstar Chainz
