In a way that only someone of Kali Uchis’ charisma and artistry is capable of, ‘Red Moon In Venus’ explores all of its themes of love with brimming energy and confident sensuality. The album focuses on a holistic experience, with lush and beautiful strains of R&B at many stops along the way.
There’s a lot of positive, beaming, and passionate kind of love to be heard across a number of tracks, whether it’s dream-like romance with her S/O on “Fantasy”, or best wishes with a farewell on “I Wish you Roses”. Her lyricism is often as simple and straightforward as needed, the elaborate instrumentation doing much more of the talking.
Certain moments could benefit from greater structure musically and lyrically, where Kali’s writing and performances soak a little too much in the atmosphere and mood of the record (“Como Te Quiero Yo”). It’s easy to overlook though considering how talented and well she’s able to craft any musical environment she wants to, whether the deep, sultry rumbling of the possessive “All Mine”, or the effortless sugary pop on “Endlessly”, or the slow-burning musings on “Blue”.
There’s really no surprise when it comes to the high standard and level of quality that Kali Uchis continues to operate at though. ‘Red Moon In Venus’ is just another installment in a discography chock-full of consistent and passionate artistry.
