Slime & B / Young Thug & Chris Brown / May 5, 2020

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

Both a celebration for Breezy’s birthday, and a gift for fans during quarantine, Young Thug and Chris Brown form an unexpected collaboration for this 13-track surprise mixtape, and while both artists don’t really overlap stylistically, they manage to blend their individual rap and R&B styles fairly successfully on this project. On the whole, the production throughout the mixtape is definitely more in Chris Brown’s style, with instrumentals and melodies that could be found off of any of his previous albums. However, in comparison to the songwriting on his last few disappointing albums, some of the choruses and verses from Chris on “Slime & B” are catchy, compelling, and full of energy and personality (“Go Crazy”). He still has his usual moments of weak lyricism and monotonous vocal delivery (“I Ain’t Tryin’”), but they’re less frequent and unpleasant that what’s usually expected. However, it’s Young Thug who shines through more on this project, showing that he truly is a chameleon within the music industry. His ability to adapt his artistic style to any of his collaborators is proven again on this R&B-heavy production, meshing well with Chris Brown by channeling more of his singing voice with a relative degree of success (“I Got Time”). His usual rapping style still stands out on many tracks though, adding good variety to Chris’s tedious singing and blending well with some of his other YSL contributors (Gunna, Lil Duke). Given how little time and preparation Young Thug and Chris Brown had in creating this mixtape, the results rise above the expectations (granted they weren’t that high). While “Slime & B” will certainly not be a landmark project for either of their careers, it succeeds in being a fun and carefree collaboration that provides people in quarantine some worthwhile listening.
