Sometimes, Forever / Soccer Mommy / June 24, 2022

Updated: Oct 22, 2022

On paper, Sophie Allison (Soccer Mommy) and Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) make quite an unexpected pairing, given the stylistic distance between the two’s body of works up until this point. But in a way that one would always hope, ‘Sometimes, Forever’ reflects a wholly complimentary relationship, drawing out the best of Allison’s strengths with the intricacies and weight that Lopatin brings to the table.

Mirroring the fluctuating ups and downs and admittedly difficult self-realizations that Allison shares throughout the tracklist, the album is the most heavy and textured her sound has ever been. It’s especially dominated by recurring dualities, where the highs of losing yourself in love (“Shotgun”) or chasing lifelong freedom (“Feel It All The Time”) thematically and musically soar far above the dark and eerie depths of burning internal demons (“Darkness Forever”) and relationship pitfalls (“Fire In The Driveway”).

But despite the tinted shades that the album wears, ‘Sometimes, Forever’ still runs on the indie rock styles and sharp-ear songwriting that Allison has always had, including the musical sentiments that make her records perfect for summertime reflection. Whether it be the familiarly ‘90s guitar layers on “Bones”, or the massive, washed out hooks like on “With U”, there is the undeniably comforting quality to her music that shines through even the darkest moments on the project.

It’s a feat that Allison conveys this sentiment of peace amidst all of the choppy and volatile parts of life in general, and all the little moments that inspire each one of these songs. Beyond the playability it has for the greater amount of this year, ‘Sometimes, Forever’ will leave a lasting, encapsulating impact of these trying times.

Highlight(s): Bones, Shotgun, Feel It All The Time, With U, Still, Following Eyes
