The New Toronto 3 / Tory Lanez / April 10, 2020

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

Known for blending the styles of rap and R&B world together, Tory Lanez delivers another album in his signature style, “The New Toronto 3,” featuring a balanced mix of singing and rapping with his usual high-energy and emotional delivery. However, while this album is a brighter spot in Tory Lanez’s total discography, it still suffers from the same shortcomings that his previous albums do. The biggest issue throughout the album is repetitiveness, in multiple aspects. The writing on over half the songs is monotonous and unoriginal, resulting in a lot of annoying verses and choruses. The unchanging melodies and delivery become tedious to listen to over time (“The Coldest Playboy”). In other places the production and instrumentation are also repetitive, taking away from the solid rapping and singing on these tracks (“Broke In A Minute”). This doesn’t take away from the fact that in many areas of the album, Lanez’s singing and rapping have vastly improved in creating catchy melodies. On songs such as “Who Needs Love” the creative instrumentals and songwriting combined with his energetic and emotive singing produce these memorable trap hits. Lanez’s aggressive rapping also shines on freestyle-type beats found on songs such as “Letter to the City 2” or “MSG 4 GOD’S CHILDREN.” Overall “The New Toronto 3” is definitely a step in the right direction for Tory Lanez. Many elements of this album point to forward progression in his artistry, and subsequently to his success.
