Considering the evolution, success, and current state of Tyler, The Creator’s career, ‘CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST’ serves as a warranted moment of unabashed boasting, and a fitting culmination of his entire artistry. Fusing together his rap roots, pop/R&B voice, and nifty elements of soul, jazz, and dub, he pulls all the punches for a high-intensity, no-frills, mixtape-like assortment of tracks that delivers on all fronts.
After a momentary hiatus, Tyler truly re-focuses on the core hip-hop elements of his artistry, where his sharp, cutting delivery, rhythmic flexibility, and cheeky lyricism are all elevated by more dynamic and electrifying production than his past work. It rings clear on the aggressive, banging flows on the all-star studded “JUGGERNAUT”, or the smooth and tasteful groove of the braggadocious “HOT WIND BLOWS,” where Tyler and Lil Wayne reflect a real synergy in their performances.
Tyler’s recognized ability to utilize his feature artists to their fullest potential is also perhaps epitomized on this body of work, never failing to pull vocal performances that greatly elevate their respective tracks. “WUSYANAME” sees YoungBoy in an uncharacteristic but stellar form with a sweeter and more heartfelt tone, whereas tracks such as “LEMONHEAD” and “JUGGERNAUT” perfectly slot their guests into their stylistic element, 42 Dugg and Uzi doing what they do best.
In full scope, ‘CMIYGL’ is gratifying for any new and unfamiliar listener, but even more so for those who have followed and loved his music since his very beginnings. It has every element of his artistry within, elevated and refined by time and experience.
