Having only pursued music professionally starting in 2018, Pink Sweat$ has already placed his name within the current scope of moody R&B-pop, and his debut album seeks to solidify his lane even further. But while it is undeniably true to his established sound, ‘PINK PLANET’ loses much of its charm from the absence of practically any risk at all.
It doesn’t take long to see that love is the sole focus of the album, as Pink Sweat$ attempts to pack in as many gushing, lovestruck songs as possible. And there are moments where his unapologetically romantic sentiments are potent, demonstrating an ability to write an endearing and convincing serenade given the right musical elements. The enchanting, string-heavy ballad ‘Heaven’ is one example, his voice darting and floating as he croons about the angelic feeling of being with a S/O.
However, much of the album fails to make any lasting impression because of its simplicity and lack of depth, both lyrically and compositionally. Tracks such as ‘Paradise’ or ‘Lows’ are well-intentioned and certainly palatable, but the nondescript instrumentals and repetitious themes of love make it difficult to connect with. At 18-tracks and about a near hour of material, the album runtime becomes difficult to justify as well.
Nothing on ‘PINK PLANET’ is even remotely abnormal or offensive, but that’s the primary issue. Pink Sweat$ will probably not lose any established fans, but his debut album may find some difficulty in sticking with new listeners.
